Crazytaxi's 1983 HB Coupe "The family Heirloom"
« on: September 16, 2010, 06:39:51 AM »
As I'm been snooping around here, trying to get some insight on my new car. I thought it would only be decent to share my project with you guys to.
This is going to be a long term prosjekt, as it hasn't been on the road for a decade. and it has a lot of rust as the pictures will eventually show.
The reason why I wanted to restore this car, is that my dad bought it "new" from the dealer in 1984 with 16 000km on the speedo. and he has been the only owner since then. So this is the car that I grew up in, and when I saw this car when I was younger, I knew it was dad coming home.
Thats the reason why I'm willing to spend ALOT more money and time than it would cost me to buy a "mint" car.. :P

But now for some pictures:

Left rear bumper fastening:

Right rear bumper fastening:

The rear: :

The weelwhell, not rusted through.. hehe:

Left side behind the rear wheel..:

Outside:

Right:

The interesting part, the inner wheelarches in front of the rear wheel:

And it seems like somebody has tried to lift it by the roof, got "new" chrome lying around, and the roof wasn't ruined..:

Cracked filler, and a small dent:

Drying in the garage:

The only wear and tear on the interior is this:

1983 floor mats (this is the ugly one..;)):

Poor image of the back seat:

The plaquet from the people that importet the car 29.12.83:

Dashcluster and anti-theft tempting stereo ;) :

two weeks ago me and my father went on a 100km road trip to get a donor car. this is a 1985 2.0i that supposedly is juiced up a bit..

Some pictures of the dismantling. The car is a rolling chassis now, with just shocks and windows.. :P every salvable clip has been sorted and cataloged.. :P

One empty shell of a door :P :

dismantling the back:

Empty trunk:

Started on the engine bay:

Dashboard finally out, here i prefer my 1995 Golf, I use about 20 minutes to get the dash out there:

Some pictures of the car that has to stand outside in the dark, while the other one gets dismantled:

Wow! This totally brings me back, deja vu  =D

Seems like you have a worse start than me, but luckily you grabbed the donor car... Will probably help quite a bit. My reason for repairing the car is actually about the same as yours! My dad had one aswell when I was younger, a red coupe with the 90 hp MA. How cool is that?!

Yup..  but hey.. gotta learn to weld proper sometime.. :P
and it helps with a dad that used to have his own salvage yard, and is a trained mechanic from back in the days, when the MA was state of the art.. so he knows a bit more then "righty tighty and lefty loosy"

Yeah got lucky on the donor car.. got it for almost free to :)

Might end up with quite the collection of spare parts as time goes by then.. since this probably isn't the last donor car i'll use.. :P
But I'm going to keep all parts that's still usable, either its for the series 1 or 2... maybe sell some of the series 2 specific parts as the build progresses..

Wicked :D
Just hope your dad didn't have DD 90109 as the reg plate then.. :P

That's true. Doesn't hurt for sure...! hehe, can't wait to see the finished result. Just give me a call if you miss anything, I have a few bits lying here aswell. I went up to Robert Antonsen and took every bit he had lying in his garage, filled a VW Caravelle to the top with doors, bonnets, doors ++ my new donorcar... :D

We were lucky, check the red one to the right:

It's sad to say, that not much is happening here right now.. :(
Because the garage only holds one car, and the first thing that I'm gonna do is to sandblast the car, and that is something I need to do outside. I haven't started on it yet because I would then need to spend more time on making the car movable, than actually getting things done..

But I haven't been lazy though.. :P I've started re-doing my daily driver:

Finally been having some progress on the car now, buddy of mine had a spot for me in his garage, so now I got about 200m2 to put my junk in... (well, not exactly because there are alot of cars there 9 to be exact (including my car and the blue parts-car)

dissasembling the inside of the car:
The sight that I found after removing carpets, and sound deadening:

Trunk-Lid (Got a spare there)

The sound Deadening in the trunk was just mush, they weren't solid any more.. :P

The metal-plate where the battery is located was rusted away, but not to shady underneath:

Radiator, this is going to be replaced by a larger "custom" one.. Anyone know about a big universal radiator that fits in the original placement?

But it wasn't leaking though :)

Almost every cable labeled, because I know that it's going to be some time until this is going to be mounted again..

My helpy helper thought maybe that it had been a bit warm for the defawarmer:

Dissasembling of the front:

We also found the spare key.. :P

Always good to see somone getting into pulling there car apart. Nice progress. If you looking for a replacement radiator, i used an alloy one for a Rx3 and goes in very easy. Not to sure how easy they would be to find in norway, but very common and cheap in NZ.
