5 Speed 13B Cosmo Coupe
« on: May 13, 2010, 05:18:36 AM »
Hi all

I have discovered an oddity - a factory 13B RESI HB Cosmo with a 5 speed manual gear box. It is in Hiroshima, Japan.

Someone who has been helping me find a Cosmo came across this one. He's wrecked a very large number of Cosmos over the years and he'd never seen one.

According to what he's found out, there were 14 13B Manual HB Cosmos made in this colour. He doesn't know how many more there were in other colours with a 13B and manual gearbox.

I was under the impression that it only ever came with an auto if it was a 13B in a Cosmo. In the US they got the same motor in RX-7s with a manual gearbox, so its not entirely unlikely.

Cheers
Dave

Hmmm, i do have the complete part number listing for a 13b manual but had never seen the car. Was only an option.

Well at least this answers the Q yes the do exist.

Wow, guess that answers the question!

Were all the manuals in that colour coupes? Is it a really late one, like '88/'89?

Yes, 14 coupes in that colour. It is a 1985 model, and is No. 14/14. Its the dark blue colour, in case you're wondering.

He said he can ask a fellow he knows over there to find out exactly how many 13B manual coupes were made.

The person he can ask is a car collector and historian, so should be able to find out.

If you really wanted to own it, the owner will sell, but from what I can gather, it won't be for less than 600 000 JPY. I'm told its immaculate condition with very low kilometres.

I passed on it myself, as I'm holding out for a 12AT one, apparently there's not much power to be made from a 13B RESI.

Fixed headlights on this one, no idea about the others.

Unfortunately, I cannot produce any pictures of this car straight away. The guy I know in Japan is several hundred kilometres away for where the car is and won't have a chance to go over and see the car as he's there for work (he's a wrecker).

I can ask for photos, but he probably won't be in any hurry to get them for me, as we have already established that I'm not interested in purchasing this vehicle, instead waiting for a 12AT Cosmo.

I have seen it. Too many kilometres and too untidy, especially for $10k NZ. Engine bay looks to be generally fiddled with, and to get it registered I'd have to get stock spring back into it and remove the exhaust. A NZ warrant of fitness doesn't do anything for you in Australia.

Also - the video of it doing burnouts in a car park that's on youtube - not helping its cause.

I think it's an awesome car. One of the better ones I've seen. The wheels and the suspension setup are spot on.

Tidy up the paintwork and you have a winner.

Yeah, and really - as long as there is no terminal rust, and the majority of the rare bits are in good nick - it's going to be hard to find something better.

Any Cosmo driven on the road is going to be in similar condition, so to find better would be to find a Cosmo tucked away in a barn or something.

929s can give you a false impression of how common mint HBs are - the Cosmo's were missing that same rust/UV protection the NZ/AU 929s got, and do not last anywhere near as  long :(

I mean, I thought Levi/cosmocuz's Cosmo coupe was a great find in 2009, and it's a piston and unfortunately seems to have extensive UV damaged interior :(
