All i can suggest  is check that the dizzy was put back in the corret postion so the timing is right. Also a good way to check the injectors are firing is to get a long screw driver and put on body of injector and put your ear on the other end and you should hear the injector clicking. It sounds like a fuel problem if spark plugs are dry.

Okay, does anyone know how closely you need to follow the emissions diagrams? It seems each hose has it's place, but surely all from the base of the carb are vacume? The diagram doesn't seem to match what I have exactly.

It's getting closer, ran for a few seconds but then cut out with a backfire. I'm starting to lean towards timing out now. Getting a good haze of gas out the back! =D I aligned the dizzy shaft spot with the raised line and slotted it back in (centre with the adjustment area) taking care not to slip a tooth (marked it with tape) but it still sounds crook.

Cheers

Finally she's up and running. Does anyone know what the sensor in the front of the turbo hat pipe section does? I also have a spare plug near the thermostat housing. Can't see that it went anyhere?

Short but sweet vid.

Next jobs:
Re-do inlet manifold gasket (OK, I didn't use one (lazy) and it won't idle, suspect air leak)
Remove turbo and send away for recon (Getting smoke when on boost - suspect seals)

I also managed to get my hands on some cheap coilovers! £150!

and of course, the all important windscreen!

Hey mate,

Are they FC coilovers? The front lower mounts look different (well, I can't see any).

Also, did you work out what the sensor on the top hat was for? (I ask 'cos I'm trying to work that out myself!)

Cheers,
Aaron

Yeah they're FC ones. It's just the way the previous owner photographed them, but the mounts are there.

I think it's for sniffing the mixtures. If you have a spare I'd take one cos mine is a soldered mess right now.  =D

Have you ever removed the rats nest with the factory ECU? I don't like the emissions crap everywhere but not sure if I can safely remove it? Obviously some bits like the boost sensor on the firewall would have to remain connected, but all that re-circulation circuit looks like it could go in the bin?

Micro update, but inlet and exhuast off (very annoying exercise with engine in the car). Used turbo ordered before I go to the expense of a recon. Will see how it goes. Fingers crossed x

Another micro update:

I got a free afternoon Sat so re-assembled the Cosmo with a second hand turbo I got off RX-Motors. I started after lunch and was done by 4:30 so I must be getting the hang of it lol. I did notice I missed a bolt on the inlet manifold though!  One of the small ones that goes on the dowel that comes out near the water gallery. Luckily(?) my galleries are plugged from factory so hopefully it won't matter! I only noticed it once I was nearly finished and to get to it the whole exhaust and turbo would have to come off as it blocks any way of getting the bolt on the thread! Suffice to say I wasn't going to do it all again for one bolt. Fucking Cosmo!

Anyway, I thought I'd give it a crank with no gas to build some oil pressure. Low and behold she fired right up (Era's expert assembly!) and the best part.... she idles now!!! I guess the inlet manifold gasket IS good for something ha ha. All I got to do now is chuck all the emissions crap back on. She has a wikipedia idle. About 1,500 rpm and lumpy like a stage 2 should be! You can definitely tell she's been ported!! :-) I didn't rev her without the emissions crap on because one of the hoses was whistling like a school boy with the amount of air pissing out of it, but will do next time.

Next job is to back her out and turn her round so the guy can come and do the screen! 8)

Well I'm getting back on the Cosmo as spring is only a few months away.

1. She's developed a 3,000rpm idle :O
2. Once given a light rev the smoke returns =(
3. Brake master is leaking

I'm assuming the 2nd hand turbo I've purchased is no good. Will check the original for cracking and go from there. Bit gutted though, this will be the 4th time I've had to pull it all apart.

Well the Cosmo as of the start of the month is now all legal and back on the road. The 3k idle was caused by part of the linkage not returning to closed. This has now been bodged with a spring from the offending linkage to the brake line :O =D The leak at the master has been fixed, although it seems to still weep from a couple of places.

Best news though, is that the smoke has cleared after a couple of good runs. The only other thing that cropped up was that the handbrake wasn't working. I ended up having to get the rear calipers rebuilt, but that was all. A new set of tyres (Falken) and everything is good.

I took the car on its first major outing last weekend to Santa Pod. Unfortantely the battery slowly went flat and it turns out the alternator is duff. Should have that sorted this week, then we go again.
