UK Cosmo

I've always wanted one of these since I saw the 3rotor.com website back in '94/'95 I think it was. I finally found one at Hurley Rotary in Coventry. It used to belong to the guru Eamon Hurley and was garaged at his place for about 10 years and then spent the last 18 months with Mick at their workshop. The engine hasn't been started in this time so it was sold as 'requiring a rebuild'. Eamon reckons you could probably crash start it but was worried there might be some corrosion on the plates from sitting. It was rebuilt not long prior to being laid up with Hurley seals and so I'm hoping if it does need a rebuild it will be a straightforward one (with my mate 'Oldone' doing the porting). I'm thinking I'll do the oil and turn method for a few weeks and see how it feels.

The body as you can probably see is very good. Not really any rust, just scuffs and dents here and there. The front windscreen unfortantely has a big crack. The tyres have heaps of tread but are cracked from age - Firestones, 205/60-15. She has a big bore exhaust but not sure what nic it's in, as appears at a glance to be mild steel. I'll get some pics of the interior but it's a faded red cloth. Tape player centre console thing is missing but I'll probably make a guage panel anyway. Boost guage and boost tap are there right now.

I can't wait to spend my weekend looking over her!

Cool project man. I would think i it was owned by the guy from Hurley Rotary the engine should be a bit tricked up. =)
It must be a pretty rare site in the UK is there many rotors getting round over there?
What engine is it running 12at or 13b?

Yeah, you'd be surprised how many rotors there are over here. I belong to Exile which is the UK's old school Mazda club. There's some pics on this link, www.gallery.exile-rotorsport.com

Here's some more pics of the Cosmo, the side badge is long gone I guess

Was your Cosmo private imported or was it sold in UK as "Cosmo"?

As far as I know the HB was sold as "Cosmo" only for japanese market and as "929" for the export market. Could this information be wrong??

@ Kramer:

Have there ever been sold HB-Mazdas in UK? Badged as "929" or whatever?

Hi, not that I'm aware of. Import only deal.

Spent some time in the garage on Sunday. Pulled the plugs and shot some two stroke in (about 25mls from a babys liquid vitamin siringe). As I was trying to undo the fan (to get better access to the main pulley nut) she started to turn! I did about 15deg and then did another shot. Repeated this until she'd done a half a revolution. Will let her soak for a night or two and then repeat again, but seems all good! :D

The air filter was looking really crumbly. It's an ITG foam pod type that Mick had warned me was really stuffed. I had to remove the air flow meter to try and figure out how to safely remove it without risking bits getting into the inlet. Turns out it was glued on so I got to tear it to bits outside. I'll put up a pic as I'm going to need some ideas on what to replace it with!

Cheers

Anyone know the easiest way to attach a filter to this thing?

If you can remove the big round plate, you should be able to bolt a pod filter adaptor onto it.

A mate very kindly hooked me up with his FD's old K&N setup. What do ya know.. a little trimming and a quick sanding and it fits perfect! :D A hose clamp still won't work due to the shape of the AFM, so I might try some velcro to hold it on.
