Chassis Codes (BIG update)
« on: September 18, 2006, 05:27:43 AM »
UPDATE:

Now on the wiki!
http://wiki.hbcosmo.com/doku.php?id=chassiscodes

Parts of chassis code...

Fuel:
E - Petrol
K - Diesel

Model:
HB - Cosmo

Rear axle (piston only, all rotarys independant rear):
E - Independant suspension
or
P - Solid rear axle (only in piston, diesel or carby petrol)
or
J - unsure..... on FE models however, sedan only?

Motor:
SH - MA 2.0l 4 cylinder (chain driven), series-1 only
PH - VC 1.8l 4 cylinder (very similar to MA), series-1 only
S - FE 2.0l 4 cylinder (belt driven), series-2 only
SN2 - 12a carby or turbo
3S - 13b injected, series-2 only
S2 - Diesel 2.2 S2 4 cylinder

To work out which series a -SN2 is, use the first digit or the chassis number e.g. HBSN2-1xxxxxx or HBSN2-2xxxxxx

After seeing a few odd chassis numbers - I am starting to doubt whether the first digit of the chassis NUMBER is the series? Can anyone confirm either way?

For example..........

HBSN2 - 100000 has always been the series-I
HBSN2 - 200000 has always been the series-II

Have not seen any examples to doubt this despite having viewed, driven, sussed out well over 100 HB Cosmo's in the last 15+ years

I wonder if its like that for HB3S's as they never came out as series-1s... so they may have decided there was no point starting them at 2xxxxx to distinguish s1 from s2.

Mazda hasn't been very helpful with anything with rotary and Cosmo in the same sentence so far! lol

Yeah, the chassis codes mentioned are the ones I have seen here in NZ.

They seem to be consistent for Japanese, NZ, and Australian HBs.

I have a series 2 sedan, chasis HB3S 102952. So i would agree that they start with a 1 as there was no series.
